Moving To British Columbia

It is indeed a splendid time for moving to British Columbia, the westernmost of Canada’s 10 provinces, as it is in the process of getting ready to host the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games! By the time you are settled in this wonderful country, you would be ready to participate and enjoy all the fund and excitement which has started bubbling throughout the province. British Columbia has everything that you could possibly ask for a new destination. From breathtaking scenery, to rustic country beauty, laid back vacation venues to a few of the most ultra-modern and cosmopolitan cities of the world, British Columbia hardly disappoints any visitor – be it short or long term. Before moving to British Columbia you need to be aware of some basic facts about the province. These include:

- The capital city is Victoria on Vancouver Island.

- The two main areas where the total population of 3,907,738 people of British Columbia is concentrated are Vancouver and Victoria.

- It is Canada’s third most populated province after Ontario and Quebec.

- It is the only province in Canada where you can experience a ‘West Coast Special’ which is the chance of skiing and golfing on the same day.

- A province which entered the Canadian confederation in 1871, its official motto is ‘Splendor without diminishment’.

- British Columbia’s largest river is Fraser River, about 850 miles long and its largest lake Williston Lake spans over 680 square miles. A highly hospitable province in Canada, British Columbia has accommodations to suit every taste and budget. An international business climate, its service industry is well equipped to serve global markets. It would be better though, if as a US citizen you were aware of the various travel rules and regulations, which include:

- It is mandatory for every US citizen to show some kind of photographic identification such as a drivers’ license and proof of citizenship like a birth certificate or certificate of citizenship, or a passport before he or she is allowed entry into Canada.

- If you are traveling with children, carry their birth certificates as well.

- Divorced parents sharing custody should carry copies of the legal custody documents.

- British Columbia has several ports of entry. Major border crossings, including the Douglas (Peace Arch) crossing, are open 24 hours while others operate on a limited schedule.

- Pets: Dogs and cats from the US must be accompanied by a certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian of Canada or the US certifying that the animal is currently vaccinated against rabies.

- All goods must be declared. Persons aged 19 and over are entitled to bring into Canada: up to 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, 200 g (8 oz) of tobacco, and 1.14 l (40 oz) of spirits or wine, or 8.5 liters (288 oz) of beer or ale.
